A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin formed from fungi. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald shared the story on September 7.
The coffin is produced using mycelium, the root-like network of fungi. It degrades rapidly and returns nutrients to the soil. People in the funeral industry note that more Australians are currently seeking greener burial options, outside of standard graves or cremation.
